DLR Waves 0-1 Wexford
SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division
Saturday August 31st, UCD Bowl
It was an improved performance from DLR Waves against Wexford, but the visitors were too strong and won the game with a stunning Ellen Molloy strike.
Wexford came flying out of the box and instantly called Rugile Auskalnyte into action, with the Lithuanian born goalkeeper being forced into making some saves. The visitors had the better of the first half but DLR were well-organized in defense and managed to weather the storm, preventing Wexford from having many clear cut opportunities.
The second half saw Wexford start as the brighter of the two sides again, and looked to have taken the lead through Ceola Bergin who had the ball in the net with a good finish, but the offside flag was correctly raised. DLR continues to defend well but there was nothing anyone could do about Ellen Molloy’s long range effort. The Ireland international produced a stunning strike which found the top corner and broke the deadlock.
The Waves had more of the ball in the final 25 minutes and created a few chances. Nadine Seward came close on one occasion, and Clionadh Donnelly almost turned a corner home. Ultimately the Waves ran out of time and the points went to Wexford.
Despite Wexford having most of the attacking play there were positives for DLR Waves, who were looking to respond to a cup heartbreak from the week prior. The Waves managed to create things going forward but couldn’t take advantage of any chances.
