Cup Heartbreak for Waves After Crashing Out to Sligo

DLR Waves 1-3 Sligo Rovers
Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup Quarter-Final
Saturday 25th August. UCD Bowl

It was a day of devastation for DLR Waves as they were knocked out of the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup by Sligo Rovers. Having come through the first round comfortably The Waves were ultimately beaten 1-3 in the Quarter-Finals.

Things started reasonably well for DLR who had most of the ball in the opening exchanges. Despite some good play between Abbie Brophy, Robyn Bolger, and Aisling Meehan The Waves weren’t able to create any clear-cut chances.

After beginning the game on the back foot Sligo grew into the match, and made good on their first real chance of the game. Just before the 20 minute mark captain Muireann Devaney broke free and played a pass to Anna McDaniel who finished well.

From that moment Sligo took control of the game at doubled their lead on the 35th minute. Kelsey Munroe stepped up to take a corner kick, with the ball flying directly into the far corner of the net. That was a wake up call for The Waves who hit back immediately Abbie Brophy crossed the ball into the box and Robyn Bolger steered it home.

The first half ended in a back and forth fashion with neither side adding to their lead. The second half however was a frustrating affair for DLR who couldn’t manage to get things going. Sligo doubled their lead just after the hour mark when Paula McGrory turned a corner into the net. Sligo closed the game out in fairly comfortable fashion.

Jess Gleeson was forced off at the end of the game with a head injury.

Throughout the match Keelin Dodd and Robyn Bolger were bright sparks for The Waves, as was Abbie Brophy who now has 4 assists since joining the club in the Summer transfer window. Aisling Meehan was also lively in a centre forward role. Rugile Auskalnyte started in goal for the 3rd consecutive game.

A notable inclusion on the bench was Pia Madden from the u19 squad who was called up to a senior matchday squad for the first time.

It was a day of disappointment and frustration for DLR Waves as once again a cup run ended at the Quarter-Final hurdle.
