Galway United 5-1 DLR Waves
SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division
Eamonn Deacey Park, Saturday 8th March 2025

Despite a good first half performance, DLR could have no complaints in defeat after a dismal second half display.
The Waves matched up to Galway United in the first half and defended well, keeping the Tribeswomen, who are one of the favourites for the title, at bay. DLR were mostly in defence mode in the first half but took the lead just after the half hour mark. Abbie Brophy was brought down in the box, and Amber Cosgrove stepped up to score the resulting penalty.
However, The Waves couldn’t put in the same performance in the second half and conceded five goals. Aisling Meaney and Emma Doherty got a brace each while Amanda Smith also scored. Before Galway started their scoring they were denied a clear penalty.
While there were plenty of positives in the first half, particularly in defence, the second half proved to be one of those days. Manager Laura Heffernan had this to say:
We we’re delighted with the first half performance, we were organised, disciplined and created some good chances. But the game is 90 minutes and we can’t play like we did in the second half and expect to get a result. We need to take the disappointment of the second half and move on to Treaty next week.
Abbie Brophy was a great attacking spark in the first half, she was replaced at halftime with a knock, with the hope being that it isn’t too serious. Another positive for the Waves was Lauren Strong making her first team return having missed out on the 2024 season through injury.
It’s a result that DLR Waves will have to take on the chin as the team moves on to a first home game of the season.
