Waves Lose All-Island Cup Opener

DLR Waves 0-1 Crusaders Strikers
March 23rd, Whitehall Stadium

Disappointment for DLR Waves as they lost out 0-1 to Crusaders Strikers at a windy Whitehall Stadium. It was a scrappy competitive game which saw both sides create chances.

The winning goal came from a corner as Amy McGivern headed in for the away side. Moments before Waves lost captain Jess Gleeson to injury, the centre back appeared to hurt her leg while swinging for a ball. Chloe McCarthy came on to partner Oleta Griffin at centre back.

DLR had chances with Michelle Doonan working hard up front and Aisling Meehan proving threatening on her debut. Both forwards had chances but were denied by Maddy Harvey-Clifford with the Northern Ireland international on good form.

In the DLR Waves net Rugile Auskalnyte made her first start of the season and was solid in goal. Oleta Griffin and Jess Gleeson proved a good partnership for the time Jess was on the field. Amber Cosgrove was effective going forward from fullback.

After a fairly even first half Crusaders edged the second 45 with forwards Cora Morgan and Leontia McVarnock causing problems for the Waves defense, the former being awarded player of the match.

It’s a disappointing start to the All-Island Cup campaign for Waves who will play Shamrock Rovers in their next group game. In the other Group C game Treaty United drew 1-1 with Shamrock Rovers.
