Waves Earn Draw Against Peas in Thriller

Peamount United 2-2 DLR Waves
PRL Park, Saturday 25th May

DLR Waves backed up a good performance in the All-Island Cup against Treaty United with a scintillating display away to Peamount United.

The current league champions went into the game as heavy favourites but Waves defended well throughout the game while not compromising on an effective attacking display with plenty of chances created.

DLR Waves took the lead from a corner kick. Eve Conheady sent a cross in which Izzy Finnegan met with her head. The ball hit off the post and went in (we’ve awarded the goal to Izzy in our player stats as the striker of the ball, however it potentially could go down as an own goal after the ball seemed to deflect of the goalkeeper which redirected it.).

From that point Peamount went in search of an equalizer and had the opportunity from the penalty spot. There was a slightly late challenge from Chloe McCarthy, and while an unlucky penalty concession the call was correct. Ireland international Erin McLaughlin stepped up against Rugile Auskalnyte, who was making her first league appearance of the season. Auskalnyte pulled off a heroic save, jumping down to her left and punching the ball away. Shortly after Peamount won a corner, from which they equalized through the head of Ellen Dolan.

The first was a competitive affair with DLR pushing forward. unfortunately Nadine Seward had to go off injured, with Freya Roche coming on as her replacement.

The second half began with The Waves going in front instantly. The ball broke from a Peamount throw in and was sent forward up to Michelle Doonan. The striker played it to Freya Roche who laid it back to Doonan. Michelle finished really well to put DLR Waves back in front.

Peamount equalized through another penalty. The referee adjudged that their attacker got to the ball before Auskalnyte. Ellen Dolan stepped up to score her second of the game.

The Waves had a lot of defending to do, and they did so well, holding off the Peamount attack. Rugile Auskalnyte got down to deny Ellen Dolan a hattrick. DLR had a chance to win the game with 15 minutes to go when Doonan pounced on a mix up at the back, but the Peas keeper recovered to make the save. Peamount had a couple of late chances but were denied through out by a stern Waves defence.

It was a well-earned point for DLR Waves. The game took place at the same time as Barcelona vs Lyon in the UWCL final, and at times it would have been easy to confuse The Waves with new European champions Barca. Rugile Auskalnyte was excellent in goal with the Lithuanian Lightning Bolt pulling off some big saves. Izzy Finnegan had an excellent game in midfield, and Michelle Doonan was the superstar of the day for DLR, working tirelessly up front and wreaking havoc on the Peamount defence.

After a difficult few start to the season DLR Waves have put together two good performances with positive results in a row. Now 2 games unbeaten, DLR Waves are in a good position to push on after the international break.
