DLR Waves 3-2 Peamount United
SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division
Saturday August 10th, UCD Bowl
Saturday saw DLR Waves pull off a famous win at the UCD Bowl with a victory of the 2023 League of Ireland champions.
It was Peamount who started the brighter with The Waves unable to find their way out of their own half. But as the game approached the 30 minute mark Jess Gleeson found Izzy Finnegan with a long pass, the midfielder went through on goal and finished past Niamh Reid Burke to give the home side the lead against the run of play. Peamount continued to push and got an equalizer before halftime, when Ellen Dolan met Jetta Berrill’s cross with her head.
The second half started better for DLR Waves however Peamount were still on top. That was until Rachel Doyle’s corner resulted in a scramble for the ball in the Peas box, which ended with Keelin Dodd poking the ball home. Things got even better for The Waves when the home side won a penalty, Amber Cosgrove stepped up and scored with the ball going in off the post.
The two-goal cushion gave DLR confidence and they controlled most of the last 30 minutes. Aisling Meehan almost added to the scoring late in the game. Peamount pushed late on and scored a late goal through Jetta Berrill.
Keelin Dodd was awarded player of the match, herself and Izzy Finnegan we’re included in the official league team of the week this season.
Rugile Auskalnyte started consecutive games in goal for the 2nd time this season. Amber Cosgrove continued her run of having started every competitive game for Waves in 2024. Izzy Finnegan and Chloe McCarthy have also featured in very match.
Aisling Meehan and Nadine Seward linked up well when they came off the bench. Robyn Bolger and Abbie Brophy, the forwards who started the game, proved to be a constant threat. Rachel Doyle was lively as she started her second game since returning to the club. Leah Donnelly made her for start for the club since joining DLR Waves, having made her debut off the bench in the first round cup game against Whitehall.
It was a great day for DLR Waves who beat Peamount for the first time since 2017, and win consecutive games for the first time in July of 2023.
