Improved Waves Fall Just Short Against League Leaders

DLR Waves 0-1 Athlone Town
UCD Bowl, Saturday 6th July

DLR Waves were unfortunate to lose by a single goal to league leaders Athlone Town. Laurie Ryan provided the assist for Roisin Molloy who scored what proved to be the winner for the Midlands side.

When the two sides met earlier in the season the Presidents Cup and FAI Cup holders won convincingly, but Saturday’s match was a much more competitive affair. Athlone started the brighter in the early stages of the first half but The Waves grew into the game and created chances, with new signing Abbie Brophy linking up well with our top scorer Michelle Doonan. Nadine Seward also provided a threat on the wing.

Athlone took the lead just before the hour mark with a good finish from Roisin Molloy. From then The Waves pushed for an equalizer and for large stretches of the second half were the better side going forward, creating more chances. There were opportunities right until the end but The Waves fell just short of taking them.

The game saw the return of Rachel Doyle who came on at half time. Freya Roche and Aisling Meehan were impactful from the bench. The defense was well organized with Jess Gleeson and Chloe McCarthy once again providing solidity.

Athlone took their chance and were efficient defensively, with centre back Jesi Lynne Rossman being awarded player of the match.
