DLR Waves 4-0 Whitehall Rangers
Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup First Round
UCD Bowl, Saturday 3rd August
DLR Waves are through to the quarter-finals of the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup after a 4-0 win over Whitehall Rangers on Saturday.
Whitehall finished as runners-up in the FAI Amateur cup last weekend and proved stubborn opposition in the first half. The non-league side held of the Waves and limited our side in terms of clear-cut chances. The home side did eventually make the break through and took a 2-goal lead into halftime.
Abbie Brophy was the most instrumental player in getting things going in terms of attack, and she provided the assists for both goals. Shannon Coady opened the scoring with her first goal for DLR Waves. Coady controlled Brophy’s cross and took a touch before finishing well. The second goal was scored by Rachel Doyle. Doyle finished superbly into the top left corner, and despite the best efforts of the PA/commentator to credit the goal to Taylor White, Rachel netted her first since returning to the club in style.
The second-half began in the perfect fashion for The Waves with Brophy providing another assist, this time for Keelin Dodd who scored her first of the season. Dodd finished well past the Whitehall keeper Jennifer Kett who did pull off some good saves to keep the score down. The Waves continued to push and after the hour mark got a 4th. Robyn Bolger and Amy Ryan exhanged passes before Bolger played the ball to Izzy Finnegan. Just like she did in the first round of the cup last year Finnegan scored a stunning strike from distance. While Izzy’s goal last year sent the game to penalties, this one was under less dramatic circumstances but still a super goal.
Whitehall pushed to get one back late on in the game. There were positives from their performances in terms of defensive organization which they can take into their EWFL campaign.

Rugile Auskalnyte made her 5th start of the season and has now played in very competition. The Lithuanian Lightening Bolt didn’t have too much to do but was alert throughout the game and was vocal in organizing her defense. Nadine Raymond and Amy Ryan got some game time with the senior side and did well in their cameo appearances, Raymond played at right back and Ryan played on the left wing. New signing Leah Donnelly made her debut off the bench, and was impressive going forward from the left back position.
Abbie Brophy was awarded player of the match. The forward was the star of the show and provided a constant threat on the right using her pace and ball-playing ability to constantly create chances. With her 3 assists Brophy is now top of the standings in our assist charts.
After this game vs Whitehall Rangers Amber Cosgrove is the only player to have started every competitive match for the senior side this season. Izzy Finnegan and Chloe McCarthy have also featured in every game.
The quarter-final draw will be made on Tuesday at 12:30 and will be streamed live on the FAITV YouTube channel. The Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup Quarter-Finals will be played on the weekend of August 25th.
