Big Win for DLR at The Showgrounds

Sligo Rovers 0-4 DLR Waves
SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division
The Showgrounds, 7th September 2024

DLR Waves picked up their 4th win of the season at The Showgrounds on Saturday with a 0-4 win over Sligo Rovers.

The Waves were out for revenge after being knocked out of the Sports Direct FAI Cup by their opponents, and made a good start when Amber Cosgrove converted from the penalty spot. In the cup meeting between the two sides Sligo started on the backfoot but wrestled away momentum from The Waves, however on this occasion DLR were able to make good on a strong start and double their lead. Abbie Brophy sent a dangerous cross into the box, the ball found it’s way to Aisling Meehan. The young star who lit up the stage for Ireland u17’s against Portugal this week laid the ball off to Keelin Dodd who sent a rocket into the top corner.

In the second half the Waves doubled their lead, with Meehan turning from provider to scorer. Aisling got a hat trick for the Ireland u17 side midweek and took her scoring form with her to The Showgrounds. Taylor White sent in a long ball which found Meehan. The forward still had work to do and had to wrestle past a defender before firing past the goalkeeper, scoring her first senior Waves goal. Shannon Coady would come on in the latter stages of the game and score her first league goal for the club, with the assist coming from Robyn Bolger. Late on Amber Hardy in the Sligo net saved a penalty to prevent the margin of victory being greater.

Before the game Nadine Seward was forced out of the starting line up with an injury in the warm up, Meehan was her replacement. Amber Cosgrove continued her run of starting every senior DLR Waves game, with Izzy Finnegan also continuing her run of featuring in every game.

Rugile Auskalnyte started a 5th consecutive match this season, and Eve Badana returned to the match day squad.

It was a great victory for DLR Waves who pick up 3 points in their quest to close the gap on the teams above them.
